The project has been side tracked over recent weeks, but I have at last had an excuse get 'hands on' with WebCT. The excuse has been the decision with my own department, the Department of Information and Communications to require students to submit electronic copies of their assignments as well as the usual printed submission. Some staff are looking to go the whole way by introducing electronic only submission.
The debate has focused on how to implement such a system. If every unit had it's own WebCT module (as they will do when my project is complete), then the obvious answer is to provide 'drop boxes' for each assignment in its own module area. However, it was agreed that a simpler solution was to create 'Submission Zones' for each level (Level 1, 2, 3 and Masters) in which students would find the drop boxes for all their relevant assignments.
This has provided me with the chance to create my first four WebCT modules, based on a template, for each zone. Our Information Officer, Richard Wiseman now has the harder task of working with staff to create all the relevant 'drop boxes', with relevant opening and closing dates.
One of the issues that has arisen from this is the issue of icons. The WebCT icons drag down the whole professional look of the current interface. I used some samples from Icons Galore (http://www.icongalore.com/)which give a much better impression. Is there a better WebCT icon set out there?
